A Short Scale Martin Dreadnought with Custom Music Villa Appointments
The HD-28 is one of Martin Guitars most popular model of acoustic. For years we have worked with Martin to create Music Villa Custom Martin Guitars, and this HD-28 MV
(Music Villa) has some special appointments that many guitars players will appreciate.
To start, the HD-28 MV has a slightly thinner solid Sitka Spruce top measuring at .105". This thinner top creates more movement and thus makes sure this guitar projects and booms.
The top is paired with Golden Era Forward Shifted Bracing, East Indian rosewood back and sides and a bone nut.
All of these build specs create a Martin guitar that will fill the room with deep Martin tone that you know and love, with one extra special feature, the HD-28 MV SS
has a short scale neck. It is very uncommon to find a Martin dreadnought with a short-scale neck, and we thought it was time to make one available.
Big Dreadnought Sounds, Easier to Play
As soon as you pick up the HD-28 MV SS
you will immediately notice it is easier to play than other dreadnoughts you have played, without using a thinner string. This is thanks to the short scale.
Compared to its brother, the HD-28 MV SS has a 24.9" scale length vs a more traditional 25.4". Because the scale (or the length from the nut to the bridge) is shorter, less tension is created thus making strings easier to fret and play.
This change in tension makes a short-scale Martin the perfect choice for many, including:
- Players who often switch between acoustic and electric guitars.
- People with smaller hands that find a traditional dreadnought difficult to play.
- Anyone who has had hand issues, or surgeries on their hand that is now having a hard time fretting a guitar.
- Someone who is just picking up the guitar after not playing for many years.
To make a point, we have many people that have had some sort of issues with their hands, from surgery to more minor issues that have made it difficult to continue to play guitar. One solution is often to use a very light string, but that creates a much thinner sound. Instead, moving to a short-scale guitar can help with less string tension, yet allow a thicker string with more robust tone.
That Martin Tone
The Martin HD-28 MV SS is full of that famous Martin tone. This guitar sounds like a recording when you strum it. Our Acoustic Letter Acoustic Specialist, Chad, has this to say about this Martin:
“The benefit of the MV Custom HD-28 Short Scale is not only the ease of play, because of the shorter neck & less string tension but there is also a great tone advantage… short scale dreadnoughts are very warm and responsive giving the guitar a wonderfully open musical sound.”
The Bottom Line
This Martin is one of "those" guitars. One of those guitars that you pick up and fall in love with. The short-scale makes it super easy to play along with classic Martin tonewoods and Music Villa secret sauce, this HD-28 will be your go-to acoustic for years to come!
